Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Child smiling after visiting children's dentist

Like adults, kids need regular checkups and cleanings for optimal oral health. These visits should ideally begin around the time a child turns one year old. Our dentists will monitor your child’s teeth and jaws as they develop, and if any problems are detected, they can be swiftly handled. As more of your little one’s teeth start emerging, we’ll add gentle yet thorough cleanings to these appointments.

Dental Sealants

By the time the molars have erupted toward the back of the mouth, your child might not have mastered brushing and flossing quite yet. The location of these teeth, as well as their grooved chewing surfaces which can trap bits of food, put them at a particularly high risk for decay. We can protect these teeth by painting a thin layer of clear resin to the teeth, which rapidly hardens into a barrier that can last for many years to come.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a mineral that can prove vital in ensuring your child grows up with strong, healthy teeth. Regular exposure to fluoride makes their teeth stronger and more resistant to decay, and it can also strengthen the adult teeth that haven’t even come in yet! Even if your child is brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and fluoride has been added to your local water supply, professional fluoride treatments at every checkup can help greatly. It takes mere minutes to apply a potent fluoride varnish to their teeth after we’ve cleaned them.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Even with the best preventive care, kids are still likely to get a cavity or two at some point. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean they have to deal with unnatural-looking metal fillings. Instead, we can repair decayed tooth structure with a putty-like composite resin. This material can be shaded to seamlessly blend in with your child’s tooth, allowing them to smile confidently around their peers.

Athletic Mouthguards

If you have a young athlete at home, you should always make sure their smile is protected as they play. Rather than forcing them to wear a flimsy, poorly fitting mouthguard from the sporting goods store, our Hiner Family Dentistry team can provide one that is designed with your child’s unique smile in mind. These mouthguards are made to fit comfortably over your child’s teeth for improved protection. Since these guards have a more natural feel, your son or daughter is more likely to wear them as instructed.

Pulp Therapy

When decay or physical trauma reaches the nerve-filled tissue in the center of a tooth (called the pulp), a monstrous toothache can ensue. In many cases, the only way to save the tooth at this point is to remove the pulp via root canal therapy. For children, though, we perform an adjusted version of a root canal, known as pulp therapy. We still remove the diseased tissue, sanitize the tooth, and seal it up with a crown or filling. However, we take great care to leave the healthy tissue untouched so as not to negatively impact the tooth’s development.
