If you’ve been struggling with tooth loss, especially with the aftermath of bone loss, you may be in luck. A new study published by the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation has shown a link between jawbone health and vitamin K2. But what is this essential vitamin, and what can you do to incorporate it into your diet? Continue reading to learn all about it.
What is Vitamin K2?
Vitamins are another name for some of the essential nutrients found in the foods we eat. Vitamin K2, in particular, is responsible for blood clotting, and controlling bone metabolism by creating osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is a mineral that strengthens bones and improves their bone density. So, vitamin K2 is essential for many functions of healing and strengthening your body.
What Foods Contain Good Amounts of Vitamin K2?
While you can get K2 supplements in tablet form, it’s more effective to consume the nutrient naturally. In fact, you’re probably eating some of the foods on this list already!
- Chicken
- Blue, Swiss, and Gouda Cheese
- Eggs
- Pork
- Natto (a Japanese dish of fermented soybeans)
- Full-fat Greek yogurt
Vitamin K2 is produced in the gut and is fat-soluble, which means it doesn’t easily dissolve in water. It will build up in your fatty tissues and release over time, so there’s no need to consume a lot of it at once (which could be dangerous.)
Adult men need approximately 120 micrograms per day and adult women need around 90 micrograms. While this amount seems small, it’s hard to get in a typical American diet. Aim to eat three of the foods on this list each day and your needs should be met.
Vitamin K2 is still far from fully understood, but while the science is mixed on how good the results are, it can’t hurt to try. Eat wisely, plan out your meals each week, and visit your dentist regularly. They may be pleasantly surprised by your jawbone health in your next X-ray!
